Options for Eco-Friendly Flooring

Many people do not realize the amazing assortment of materials available for the person who wants to install eco-friendly flooring. If you are considering a renovation project and would like to do so in a more environmentally conscious way, you will want to be aware of the possibilities. With a range that includes things made from recycled materials to sustainable and other natural materials, you are sure to find something that will suit your taste and budget.

Recycling has become one of the most popular sustainability initiatives in many fields, and construction is no different. Metal and glass are reclaimed and recycled to make tiles that you can use in your bathroom or kitchen. And old carpeting is being recycled and remade into new carpeting that requires less manufacture of new synthetic material. And while these processes take the old products and make something new, another popular way to recycle is simply to reuse, which is exactly what is done with reclaimed wood flooring. This eliminates the need to cut down additional trees to make the flooring.

Aside from recycling, it is becoming more popular to use materials that are sustainable on their own. Although most softwoods are not considered usable for flooring, cork is an exception. Its elasticity makes it very comfortable to walk on, it provides insulation and helps to dampen sound, making it a popular choice. Bamboo is another popular choice, especially since it is stronger and more durable than many hardwoods, and it only takes three years for it to be mature enough to be used, making it very sustainable.

When it comes to natural materials, there are a number of different choices. Carpeting can be made from natural material such as wool, and so long as it is not treated with harsh chemicals it is very eco-friendly. Linoleum, not to be confused with vinyl, is made from linseed oil and other natural materials and would be suitable in place of tile in many locations. And finally, natural stone floors can be quite striking and are environmentally sound.

With this number of choices available for eco-friendly flooring, it is hard to imagine why someone would want to go with anything less. And of course choosing your material is only the beginning of the green renovation practices. You'll also want to look to find methods of installation that are equally good for the environment. And no green project would be complete without ensuring that as much of the waste as possible is recycled or reclaimed.
